Fantastic Footpaths - A Village Voice Initiative

Following the 'Voice of the Village' questionnaire and subsequent community meetings, many villagers expressed a willingness to make better use of and improve our network of fantastic footpaths.

So on Thursday 15 February 2018, 22 people (and there were another 10 who sent apologies) held a meeting in the Three Horseshoes chaired by John Foster, Parish Council lead for footpaths. John said “We had a great turnout with lots of ideas put forward. Following a lively discussion we agreed to move forward on two specific initiatives, Adopt a Footpath and Chicken Chasers Walks, possibly with others to follow at a later date.”

Adopt a Footpath

Minor maintenance work and improvements can be carried out by volunteer villagers, which prompted the start an Adopt a Footpath scheme whereby walkers offer their services to do minor maintenance work on a nominated footpath of their choice. More than one person can adopt the same footpath. Any work that cannot be undertaken can be reported to John Foster who will inform Wiltshire Council.

As of 19 March 2018, 15 of our 34 footpaths have been adopted. A wonderful start to the scheme. See the link to the Adopters List below.

Chicken Chasers Walks

Jamie Shaw will arrange regular Chicken Chasers walks typically starting and finishing at the Three Horseshoes pub. Anyone can come along and enjoy a convivial walk along our fabulous footpaths. Dogs welcomed.

The first very successful walk took place on Saturday 17 March. Jamie reported "11 folks and Caroline's dog Lola braved the initial snow, before it quickly stopped and over the course of an hour and a half we enjoyed a nice 3 mile walk around the glorious paths of Chapmanslade, with a lovely winter scene. The walk was followed by a drink in the pub as a way of reward, in front of the warming fire."

The next walk is planned for 2pm on the 14th April. Meeting at The Three Horseshoes. Again it will be around 3 miles.

Chapmanslade has many Footpaths, Bridleways and Byways. They give us access to the beautiful countryside as well as providing easy and direct routes through our Parish.

Some of our footpaths are diificult to pass. This one on the left is overgrown with nettles and brambles with little room for the footpath.
